5 Common Myths About Plant-based Foods Busted

With everyone announcing their switch to plant based diets, with prominent leaders and your favorite celebrities on the lead, there’s still some confusing information in the atmosphere. Anti-plant-based individuals have come up with negative information to make you nervous about taking a step into a healthy, plant-based diet lifestyle.

Let’s take a look at the most common myths about plant-based diets and put the facts straight.

1.    A plant based diet is too expensive to maintain

Let’s face it, buying fresh produce from your local farmer’s market is definitely cheaper than the supermarket grocery store. Plus, the produce will be fresh and naturally ripened unlike the ones which are prematurely picked and ripened artificially for quick cash. Along these lines, off-season fresh fruits and vegetables will naturally be more nutrient enriching than those picked prematurely and ripened.

Whole grains and legumes are also a lot more expensive than meat. In addition, they are packed with protein, minerals and vitamins. If you buy them in bulk, chances are that you’ll get a huge discount.

The fact is, plant-based foods are quite affordable and they can only get expensive as you make it.

2.    A plant based diet does not contain enough protein

Really? Whoever’s saying this has not done enough research on plant-based proteins. Have you checked some of the proteins you can eat on a plant based diet? That’s just to mention.

In reality, a complete protein is one that carries all the essential amino acids. However, animal-based protein is not the only option for complete proteins. Whole foods also deliver the nine essential amino acids. These foods include whole grains, nuts, fruits, vegetables and legumes.

A common misconception around this area is that you must combine various foods to get enough protein. Truth is, as long as you’re eating a well-rounded plant-based meal, you will get all the essentials you need. And as much as you’re consuming enough calories from whole, plant-based foods, you’re taking in as much protein.

3.    Plant based foods are just high in carbs

Whole grains, fruits and vegetables are high in complex carbohydrates, which is exactly what you need for energy. So they’re not so bad in any case. On the contrary, processed carbs are unhealthy because they increase blood sugar and cause weight gain.

In addition, whole, plant based foods are rich in necessary minerals, vitamins and not to mention antioxidants. They are also high in fiber, which actually helps in digestion of carbs.

4.    Plant based foods take a lot of time cook

Of course, you will have to spend some time to prepare a healthy meal. But what’s better? This or a quick packaged meal that will not even fill you? In any case, preparing meals doesn’t mean that you will be stuck in the kitchen a whole evening.

There’s a way you can simplify the process; use a slow cooker to make your meals or prepare meals for a whole week. Investing in a salad spinner can also save time for washing and drying leafy vegetables.

5.    If you eat plant based foods, you’re going to become so skinny

In reality, a plant-based diet will help you live a healthier lifestyle. Keep in mind that plant-based does not mean that you feed entirely on foods that come from the ground. It’s rather about eating more of the plant than animal-based foods. The extreme is going vegan, whereby you’ll have no business to do with animal products forever. It’s a choice with its own benefits too.
