There are different reasons why we take on meal prepping. Whether it is to work on portion control, practice eating healthier or even dieting, you will need to be well equipped with apt kitchen tools.

To be honest, no one wants to spend hours on end in the kitchen. It may be even more daunting if you do not have the proper tools for the job.

Here are your must-have kitchen tools to make your meal prepping a bliss.

High-Quality knives and Cutting Boards

The fundamental tool to chopping, dicing and slicing your ingredients proficiently is a good set of quality knives. Look for a set that includes a pair of kitchen shears for cutting through poultry and fish flesh. You might also want to look out for one made from a long-lasting material, preferably the stainless steel kind.

Maintenance is also a key factor to consider for your knives to last you a good while. Invest in a good knife sharpener and sharpen them at least once or twice a year. Make sure you also hone your knives regularly to recalibrate the angle of the blades. If you are not good at it, a professional will be able to keep your knives in top-notch condition.

It goes without saying that kitchen knives and cutting boards go hand in hand. A good quality cutting board is an essential meal prep tool because most foods will require using one. It is therefore recommended to have at least two cutting boards, one for vegetables and another one for meats to reduce cross contamination.

Cutting boards come in a variety of materials with the wooden ones being the best option.

Food Processor

Food processors are a meal prepper’s best friend. You can count on a food processor to do just about everything from slicing to dicing virtually any vegetable or fruit. The good thing about a food processor is that you have plenty of different blade attachments for different tasks. For instance, you can also make bread dough, process meat, nuts and even coffee beans.

You will find many food processors on the market today, and even better, they are affordable. Some are small, such as mini choppers, ideal for small tasks and some are bigger and complex for more intricate or involved tasks. With these, you can prep your meals in a snap and actually have fun while at it.

Strainers and Colanders

Colanders are some of the most overlooked tools in the kitchen. In fact, you will most likely remember a colander when you need to drain your steamed veggies or pasta. They come in different sizes that will fit in any type of sink and are made from materials such as mesh, aluminum as well as plastic. Look for a strainer that is durable and can withstand high temperatures, both while in use and when cleaning.

Pressure Cooker / Instant Pot

The pressure cooker helps you cook anything as you would normally but in dramatically less time. As a meal prepper, you will appreciate prepping large meal quantities in very little time.

A pressure cooker is one of the most versatile home appliances you will find on the market today. It can be used to sauté, as a browning pan and serve as a steamer as well. This pot was designed to relieve labor-intensive cooking and take the place of otherwise multiple appliances that would normally be used.

Silicon Baking Cups

Baking cups are an essential asset when prepping your meals. These cups are important for preventing the batter from sticking on the pans’ sides when baking as well as for separating food and snacks.

With baking cups, cleanup is also much easier and is less stressful.

Additionally, these cups come in different colors, sizes and in both disposable and reusable options. Whichever way you choose to use them, you have several options to pick from.

Glass Storage Containers

Finding the right meal prep containers should be at the top of your priority. The first thing you need to avoid is plastic containers that contain BPA, a substitute that is known to increase blood pressure and hormonal disruption. You will also need to look for a container that is durable, one that is microwave, dishwasher, and freezer safe.

Glass containers are therefore your best bet when it comes to storing your prepped meals. Look for those that come with an easy to clean, leak proof seal to keep your food fresh for longer periods.

Zip Lock Bags

Ziplock bags are a great convenience when it comes to storage. Most of these plastic bags are reusable, BPA-free and PVC-free.

Glass storage containers are best for storing prepared meals but are not always a practical solution. This is where ziplock baggies come in handy. You will need to stash a few different sized and freezer-safe zip lock bags for packing snacks or freezing small amounts of prepared meals.

Ultimately, no matter the tools you choose to stock your kitchen for your meal preps, make sure they are of good quality and are easy to use.
